National Museum and Art Gallery

The museum is closed on Tuesdays and is open from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm on Fridays. The rest of the week it opens from 10.30 am to 4 pm in summer and until 3 pm in winter.

Not far from Swayambhunath, the National Museum but the art gallery has a fine collection of religious art.

The museum has a rather eccentric collection that includes some moon rock, a number of moth-eaten stuffed animals, a vast number of uniforms and military decorations, swords and guns, and a portrait gallery. The most interesting exhibit is a leather Tibetan cannon.

The gallery displays a number of treasures. There is a superb collection of statues and carvings (stone, wood, bronze, terracotta) - some pieces date to the first century BCE.
